The section of East Grand Avenue between State Street and the river had been closed since March 2 for utility and streetscape work, which meant that for most of spring, walking from Riverside Park to the State Street shops involved a detour around orange barrels. That ended May 1 with a ribbon cutting at the corner of East Grand and State. The reopening lands in the same season that Friends of Riverfront is running an eleventh Music at Harry's Place concert to mark the series' 30th year. For anyone who lives here, the practical result is that summer 2026 is the first year in a while when the Friday-night downtown loop actually works as one continuous walk.
The thesis, if you want the short version
The three anchors of a Beloit summer weekend, the Friday concert at the Harry Moore Pavilion, the Saturday morning farmers market, and the rotating pop-up nights on State and Grand, used to live on separate blocks with construction between them. They no longer do. That is why this year's calendar is worth reading in order rather than skimmed for a single event.
Fridays: the Harry's Place spine
Music at Harry's Place in Beloit is a free summer concert series on most Friday evenings June 12 through August 28, 2026. Traditionally 10 free concerts are presented at the Harry Moore Pavilion during Music at Harry's Place, but since this is the 30th year for the concert series, there will be 11 concerts in 2026.
A few names worth writing on the calendar:
- Friday, June 12: The Jimmys open the series, entertaining crowds with their blues and soul music.
- Returning favorites through the summer include the Gary McAdams Band and Nauti Nauti, along with new additions such as the Birddog Blues Band.
- Concerts run at 7 p.m. each Friday, with food vendors offering a variety of taste treats starting at 6 p.m.
- The concerts take place on the bank of the Rock River in Riverside Park and offer views of the sunset. Riverside Park is dog-friendly, so you are welcome to bring your furry friend as long as you have him on a leash.
The one Friday this pattern breaks is August 7. That is the night to leave the lawn chairs at home.
What to eat before you sit down on the lawn
The food trucks at the pavilion are fine. The better move, if you're not in a hurry, is to eat first on Grand or State and walk over. A rough map by block:
East Grand, now that it's open again. Lucy's #7 Burger Bar sits on the newly reopened stretch. The story of Lucy's #7 Burger Bar dates back to 1926, when Lucy Winslow was born. Entrepreneur, restaurant owner, WWII nurse and mid-century pin-up girl, Lucy was a powerhouse. The Burger Bar opened in 2015, honoring her story and her love of great service and farm fresh ingredients. Two doors are worth trying on the same block, then a short walk to the pavilion.
State Street. Velvet Buffalo Modern Italian for a slower dinner, truk't Tacos when you want to keep moving, and Grand Avenue Pub at the corner where State meets Grand. Zen Sushi is a block over, with a menu that leans into fusion rolls if that is your speed.
Ironworks and Hotel Goodwin. Merrill & Houston's, a steakhouse in the industrial-chic Ironworks Hotel, pays homage to Beloit's storied past, with brick walls filled with black-and-white photos of the city's memories. Above Hotel Goodwin, The Rooftop is Beloit's premier rooftop hangout, with indoor and outdoor portions and big windows that give views of downtown.
Prairie Avenue, if you drove. Head up Prairie Avenue to find Dulce Vida, a Mexican-owned café serving authentic favorites.
Thursdays and Saturdays fill in the rest of the week
Two standing weekly things are what make the Friday concert feel less like an event and more like the middle of a rhythm.
Thursdays, State and Grand. Downtown Late Edition offers free live music on the second and fourth Thursday nights in June, July and August at the corner of State Street and Grand Avenue from 5 to 7 p.m. A shorter window, right at the corner that used to be blocked off.
Saturdays, riverfront. The Downtown Beloit Farmers' Market returns starting Saturday, May 2, marking the start of another season for one of Wisconsin's longest-running and largest weekly markets. If you catch the market at open and finish the loop with breakfast at Bushel & Peck's or Jerry's Cafe, you have used the same walking route you'd use for a Friday concert, in reverse and in daylight.
Second and fourth Mondays, back at the pavilion. Dancing at Harry's Place offers free dance lessons on the second and fourth Monday of each month, beginning June 8. Instructors include Peggy Chavey teaching the two-step and the cha-cha, Ken and Dorothy Stroud teaching two nights of swing dance, and Country Plus teaching two nights of line dancing.
The three dates that break the pattern
If your calendar can only fit a handful of downtown nights this summer, these are the ones that only happen once.
Sunday, June 21: Make Music Day. Make Music Day returns to Beloit on Sunday, June 21 when musicians will perform at venues throughout the Greater Beloit area for free. The point is dispersion. You end up in bars, on porches, and in courtyards you wouldn't otherwise walk into.
Friday, August 7: DBA Street Dance. The DBA Street Dance runs 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7 on State Street, featuring live music, food and other activities. State Street closes to cars. This is the Friday to skip Harry's Place.
Saturday, August 8: Beloit Kubb Open. Returning to Pohlman Field, the Beloit Kubb Open will be held Saturday, Aug. 8. Yes, the Swedish lawn game. Even if you have no idea how it's played, the field on a Saturday afternoon is worth the walk.
A few other one-offs worth glancing at:
- The USA Table Tennis Midwest Championship will be held at Beloit Memorial High School June 13 and 14, with about 250 players expected.
- From June 29 to July 2, the American Junior Golf Association Girls' Junior All Stars Championship will be held at the Beloit Club.
- Sky Carp home games at ABC Supply Stadium, which slot in around the concert schedule and are worth pairing with a walk along the river.
New doors to open on your loop
If you have been walking the same route for years, the point of this summer is that there are addresses you have not walked past yet.
On the odd side of the 300 block of State Street, a new retail row will begin to take shape over the next few months. In the first three months of 2026, Hendricks Commercial Properties took out building permits for the block. Watch that side of the street change month to month.
A few doors that have been open long enough to have a rhythm but are still worth a first visit if you have not been:
- La Croûte Bakery Café, which opened in October 2024, is a women-owned business founded by a Stateline Area native, an upscale bakery and café serving specialty coffee drinks alongside a rotating menu of freshly baked pastries, soups, and more. Farmers market morning stop.
- The Rogue Bookstore, closing in on its first anniversary in downtown Beloit.
- Austin's Filling Station, formerly Gopher's Filling Station, reopened under new ownership in July 2024, with a breakfast menu featuring award-winning Bloody Marys, voted "Best" in the Best of Stateline 2024.
- Pentagono Restaurant at the Galleria, which opened in August 2024, specializing in Dominican Republic dishes rare to find in Wisconsin, with a signature "Dominican Flag" of white rice, stewed beans, and stewed beef or chicken.
- Home Décor & Gifts on State Street opened in October 2024, with apparel, décor, gifts, children's items and more. As a sister store to Vintage Bliss Décor, swing by their shop afterward for more finds.
And a beer stop that has earned its regulars: The taps at G5 Brewing Company are always changing, with unique sours and IPAs, and the "Hindenburg In A Lightning Storm" Kolsch is a mainstay the locals love.
How to actually use the calendar
The simplest way to read all of the above is as a loop, not a list. Park once. Start on the reopened East Grand block, walk the 400 block west toward State, cut down to the pavilion in Riverside Park for the 7 p.m. show, and end the night either on State or at The Rooftop. On Saturdays, run the same route in the opposite direction with market bags. The reason this reads as a single post rather than a roundup is that until May 1, this route did not exist as one continuous walk.
